Advocating for Roosevelt Island
Roosevelt Island faces unique issues, and Julie has been a strong advocate for Islanders in her time in office. Julie has been working hard on issues to improve quality of life for Roosevelt Islanders:
Fighting to grant residents of Roosevelt Island the power to vote for members of the board of the Roosevelt Island Operating Corporation (RIOC)
Roosevelt Island Tram - publicly called on RIOC to review the request for Roosevelt Island residents to have priority boarding for the tram. RIOC needs to obtain and provide further clarification of existing New York State Transportation laws to determine the feasibility of prioritizing access to existing public transit
F Train Tunnel Construction - Successfully changed the MTA’s original plan so that Roosevelt Island received increased shuttle service for residents and decreased the amount of time the F train tunnel would be under construction
Allocated millions to support nonprofits and schools on Roosevelt Island such as the Roosevelt Island Historical Society, NY Junior Tennis League, baseball leagues, composting programs, Carter Burden Senior Center, and after school programs such as P.S. 217's program with the Museum of the Moving Image and robotics programming at Cornell Tech. In addition, Julie has funded vital technology upgrades to PS 217 and Roosevelt Island Library
Reversed a rule by the Department of Consumer and Worker Protection that was preventing food delivery services to cross the bridge onto Roosevelt Island
Partnering with the Department of Transportation to install a new material to resurface the bike lane on the Roosevelt Island Bridge—the first time the material has been used by the Department of Transportation in New York City—making the bike lane safer during inclement weather
Working with elected colleagues to pressure Roosevelt Island Operating Corporation (RIOC) and the MTA to expedite the installation of OMNY readers at the Roosevelt Island Tram
Allocating substantial funding for technology upgrades at the New York Public Library on Roosevelt Island as well as at P.S./I.S. 217
Providing funding and support for the continuation of the Roosevelt Island composting site
Successfully advocating for RIOC to lower its Sportspark rates for Island residents.
Julie will continue to be an active representative for the Roosevelt Island community and address unique local issues.
